In Canada, history has been made. Governer General Michelle Jean has granted Stephen Harper's request to proroque Parliament for 6 weeks. When Jean granted the Prime Minister's request, she let him avoid A No Confidence VIte that was set for Monday. This No Confidence Vote could have toppled his minority government making Stefan Dion as Prime Minister of Canada. Harper now has 6 weeks to plan a federal budget that the Tories will present to Parliament on Jan 26. It is obvious that there will not be a no confidence vote now because Harper will now go back and listen to their ideas on government.

  1. I for one, found the thought of a coalition government kind of scary. But then, I think the Conservatives as they stand now are scary too.
So, no toppled government for now. I certainly hope that Mr. Harper is actually taking the time to communicate with other members of his caucus and even the provincial leaders so that he is more informed and able to govern as he should.Times are tough; all advice should be considered.
And, I have to admit, I am one of those cranky old bags that believes that if voters who were entitled to vote but chose not to and are now making the most noise...well they can ferme le bouche! It shouldn't take a near collapse of government to draw interest in citizens. It will be interesting to see what happens in the next 6 weeks.
PS. Happy Holidays, Jacqueline. I will be back to see you in January and look forward to more entries in the meantime.
